8.2 Fables

1 What is a fable

Read about the fables and answer the questions below. Check your spelling once you finish.

A fable is a short story with an applicable moral lesson. The word itself comes from Latin and it means to speak. The characters in a fable are usually animals whose words and actions reflect human behaviour. Some of the best known fables are those attributed to Aesop, a slave who lived in Greece in the sixth century BC. A popular modern fable is George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945).
A moral is concerned with what is right and wrong in human behaviour - and the good and bad in human character. The moral is the most important part of a fable. A moral is not a one-word concept, such as "friendship" or "bravery." A moral is a short phrase that can be repeated and taught. Examples of morals include "treat everyone equally" and "kindness does more than severity."
