5 Listening

Listen to an expert talking about 21st century skills and choose the correct answer for the following sentences.

If you are a student in the 21st century, 21st century skills are something that you need to obtain in order to be successful in your future career in the Information Age. Here are twelve abilities that today’s students must be aware of and work on. The first group of skills are the learning skills, which include the four C's, i.e. critical thinking (finding solutions to problems), creativity (thinking outside the box), collaboration (working with others) and communication (talking to others). These skills vary in terms of importance, depending on an individual’s career aspirations.

For scientists, critical thinking is the most important quality. The same is true in business settings, where critical thinking is essential to improvement. Critical thinking is what helps students figure stuff out for themselves when they don’t have a teacher at their disposal.

Creativity is of equal importance as a means of adaptation because it empowers students to see concepts in a different light, which leads to innovation.

Collaboration means getting students to work together, achieve compromises, and get the best possible results when solving a problem, and it may be the most difficult concept in the four C's. Students need to be aware of the fact that they have to be willing to sacrifice parts of their own ideas and adopt others to get results for the team and, later on, their future work place.

In the end, communication is the skill that brings all of these educational qualities together. Students need to learn how to effectively convey ideas to different personality types. Without understanding proper communication, students in the 21st century will not be able to progress in their careers.

But the four C's are only the beginning. 21st century skills also require students to understand the information that’s around them. Literacy skills like information, media and technology literacy, or IMT skills, are something students need to be aware of and prepared to learn about.

But to truly round out a student’s 21st century skills, they need to learn from a third category, which includes life skills. Flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills are needed not only in our personal lives but also in our future professions. Students need to be able to deviate from their plans if something changes, they need to be able to motivate a team and be ready to start projects or plans on their own. Social skills are all about meeting others and networking for mutual benefit.

Do employers actually want people with 21st century skills? Yes, they really want students with the adaptive qualities they need to keep up with a business environment that’s constantly evolving.

a) 21st century skills are abilities.

b) Learning skills include C's.

c) helps students to figure out things by themselves.

d) Information literacy the four C's.

6 Reading

Read the text about 21st century jobs and decide whether the sentences below are True or False. Correct the false sentences.

I am sure that all of you had a very clear idea of what you wanted to do in the future when you were a child. Many children see themselves growing up to be a doctor, a firefighter, a ballerina or a model. But as we grow up, things change and most of us don't really have a clear idea of our future careers. Things were a lot easier in the past because there weren't so many jobs out there and people used to spend their entire working life in one, or maybe two companies. Things have changed dramatically in the 21st century due to the fact that there is a long list of jobs which did not exist a decade ago.

Let us have a look at some of the hottest 21st century jobs. Bloggers are, by no surprise, at the top of the list because blogging has become a huge hit in the 21st century. Not only do bloggers get to earn a whopping amount of money, they also get to share their innermost thoughts and ideas with a large number of people. You have to be super creative in order to keep the attention of people nowadays, since you don't want them to get bored and never read your blogs again. Another advantage of the job is that you can work from your sofa or from the comfort of your bedroom. So, if you have a good sense of humour and are good at writing, go for it!

Most of the children, teenagers and even adults spend their free time watching videos on YouTube and follow some YouTubers, so we are all aware of the fact that those people are making a fortune. If you think that you are funny, outgoing, smart and eloquent, know a lot about something, you can try to create your own content on YouTube and become a YouTube Content Creator. Not only can you earn a lot of money, but the knowledge you gain creating content on YouTube can open a lot of doors in big media houses.

Our lives would be pretty boring without our smartphones and we all know that they are all the rage now. They become smarter and smarter every day, but they need the accompanying apps to make them smart. In the era of gadgets and smartphones, choosing to become an Application Developer is a sure way to make plenty of money because there can never be enough apps for all the smartphones and all the things that we, becoming lazy and vain, want to have on our phones. Although it is a high-flying job, be sure to have plenty of IT experience because it's not a job for the rookies.

The list of the jobs goes on and on, one of the jobs being a Genetic Counsellor, a person who advises couples to ensure they do not fall prey to inheritable diseases from their lineage, or a Virtual Assistant who works from home and assists customers with a company online through a live chat. There is a vast variety for everyone to choose from, so think very carefully about your character, skills and preferences and give it a try. You don't need to worry if you don't like the job after a while, there are others just waiting for you!

a) Bloggers write blog posts or record videos and share them with people on the Internet.

b) Bloggers can work from wherever they want.

c) You can be a YouTuber even if you are shy.

d) If you are a YouTuber, you can't get a job in a big media house.
