Welcome to Inventions where we are talking about some of the biggest digital inventions of the 20th and 21st century.
Although a lot of people think that YouTube has been a part of our lives for a long time and we can't really remember living without it, it is not really that old. A first YouTube video appeared in April 2005 and it was a short film Me at the zoo. Millions of people still watch it every day, although it is not very interesting when compared to the modern videos.
In 1984 Apple released the first Macintosh desktop computer which was the first affordable computer with a graphic interface. And in 1991, Tim Berners, a British scientist, invented the World Wide Web. He was then working at the CERN research center in Switzerland so the first website was the CERN address. It was in August 1991 that the website went online.
We know how it would be difficult to find anything on the Internet without a good search engine so we all use it on a daily basis and Google is the most popular one today. But the first search engine was created in 1990 and its name was Archie.
Last but not least, email is a very important part of our private and business life. It is the oldest invention and the first email was sent in 1971. The person who sent it was a computer engineer Ray Tomlinson who is also the first person to use @ symbol because he needed something to separate his user name from the name of the Internet server.
