2 Listening

Listen to a father talking about his son's criminal past and fill in the missing words.

When I first found out that my son was part of a gang, I was in disbelief and didn't want to admit that it was true. There had been some instances of misbehaviour and lies about where he was and what he was doing, but I couldn't believe that his dishonesty would lead to criminal behaviour. He had never shown any disrespect to me and was always obedient at home. He did his homework, spent time with us and his brother.

He never experienced any mistreatment from anybody in his family, so we were all really shocked when we got the call from the police. They told us that he had been involved in an armed robbery and that he had been shot by a police officer while trying to escape. Luckily, he survived. He spent three years in an institution for juvenile offenders. We don't look at it as misfortune; we think that this was what saved his life. He is now back in school and planning to go to university and become a social worker. He really wants to help other kids in need.
